My NAS project
Introduction
Here I’ll talk about how I set up a custom NAS for my home, with TrueNAS, a selection of hardware and further software customizations.
Hardware
Below is a list of my hardware that I picked out for the system. This is overkill in many regards, but I enjoy building powerful computers and wanted to see what I could do with more processing power. In no particular order:
- Case: Cooler Master HAF XB EVO
- Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S
- Power Supply: Seasonic FOCUS PX-750
- RAM: G.Skill Trident Z RGB Series, 4 x 16GB
- Motherboard: Asus Prime X299- A II ATX Motherboard (Intel X299) LGA 2066
- CPU: Intel Core i9-7900X X-Series
- Storage OS: WD_BLACK 500GB SN770 NVMe
- Storage HDD: 2 Seagate BarraCuda 4TB Internal Hard Drive HDD Seagate BarraCuda 4TB Internal Hard Drive HDD
- Storage SSD: 2 SAMSUNG Electronics 870 EVO 2TB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD in RAID
Operating System
TrueNAS Scale, you can read about it here. This was chosen as this was a blend between management, scale and home use. I started with TrueNAS Core but then realized that my ability to spin up VMs was not as great. I will talk more about the apps I am installing and the applications running on my system in my next post, as well as the network setup used with this system.
